Safeguarding against Forgetfulness

Read Deuteronomy 7 – 9

Beware that thou forget not the LORD thy God, in not keeping his commandments, and his judgments, and his statutes, which I command thee this day: Lest when thou hast eaten and art full, and hast built goodly houses, and dwelt therein; And when thy herds and thy flocks multiply, and thy silver and thy gold is multiplied, and all that thou hast is multiplied; Then thine heart be lifted up, and thou forget the LORD thy God. Deuteronomy 8:11-14 KJV

This instruction was given to Israel before they entered the Land of Promise. God understood, once established in the land, they would be tempted to forget His role in their lives. I find it amazing how blessing and prosperity often lead to forgetfulness. When we are hurting or in need we are quick to remember the Lord and ask Him for help, that is when we start going to church and reading our Bible, but when things go well and we have everything we want, we just as quickly forget the Lord. We start thinking it was our hard work and good common sense that enabled us to enjoy the good things of life. Our safeguard against forgetfulness is the same that God gave to Israel: faithfulness to His Word will protect us from forgetfulness. As we obey His Word we are reminded of His place in every part of our life, and instead of pride, we are filled with humble gratitude.

Lord, how I need you every day and in every way! I know in me there is the tendency to take credit for my successes and to forget your blessings. Help me remain faithful in my walk with you that I might never forget all I am and have comes from you.
