Three Baptist agencies— Regular Baptist Builders Club, Baptist Church Planters, and Baptist Mid-Missions—are assisting churches and families affected by Hurricane Harvey in Houston. The sister agencies have established donation links and are coordinating workers to go to the affected areas. Each agency is informing its constituency about the effort: Baptist Builder’s Club Disaster Relief, Baptist Church Planters Disaster Relief, and Baptist Mid-Missions Hurricane Relief.

David Whipple, executive director of ChurchCare at Baptist Church Planters, contacted Regular Baptist Builders Club to determine the needs of GARBC churches affected by Hurricane Harvey. Baptist Church Planters representative Larry French met with Baptist Mid-Missions church planters Gerald and Julie Hawk and Dario and Talitha Chiesa of Good News Baptist Church in Katy, Texas, and with GARBC pastor Albert Armitage of Berean Baptist Church in Humble, Texas, to assess needs and coordinate relief efforts. Larry, a retired ChurchCare missionary builder, spent the weekend surveying the damaged areas and seeing firsthand the needs of church families who suffered the greatest loss.

Several church families are unable to return to their homes. In both churches, Berean Baptist Church in Humble and Good News Baptist Church in Katy have several families displaced by floodwater. In Humble, some neighborhoods still have restricted access, and in many cases, insurance adjusters have not met with families to determine the scope of coverage and payouts. It could be another week before the trash crowding the streets will be removed enough to allow work crews into the hardest hit neighborhoods.

What can you do?

  1. PRAY for the Houston missionaries and families affected by the storm. The Hawks and the Chiesas and their children have spent many hours helping neighborhood families remove trash and damaged possessions from homes. Members of Berean Baptist and Good News Baptist have volunteered their time to remove trash, clean clothing, and relocate the displaced families.
  2. GIVE to a disaster relief fund.
