A Faithful Friend

Read 1 Samuel 18 – 19

And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. And Saul took him that day, and would let him go no more home to his father’s house. Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul. 1 Samuel 18:1-3 KJV

When Saul chose David to serve him and be part of his household it set him on course to fulfill the will of God in his life. God had already chosen David to be the next king. It also provided David with a loyal friend in Jonathan, the son of Saul. Like most good friendships there was chemistry between them; their souls gelled. There was also commitment. Good friendships need both. In future years Saul would turn on David and even try to kill him but Jonathan always remained a faithful friend. He sought to establish peace between his father and his friend, he protected David from the wicked plans of his father, and he encouraged David in times of discouragement. Jonathan was the kind of friend we would all want to have and the kind of friend we should all seek to be. Do you have a friend like Jonathan? Better yet, can you and I say we are a friend like Jonathan?

Lord, I am grateful that I have such a friend in You, as the Scriptures say, You are a friend that sticks closer than a brother (Proverbs 18:24). I am also grateful for the lifelong faithful friends You have given me. Help me, in return, be a faithful loyal friend as well.
