A Sad Reminder

Read Numbers 3:1-4

And Nadab and Abihu died before the LORD, when they offered strange fire before the LORD, in the wilderness of Sinai, and they had no children: and Eleazar and Ithamar ministered in the priest’s office in the sight of Aaron their father. Numbers 3:5 KJV

During the numbering of the children of Israel, as attention turned to Aaron and his descendents there was a sad reminder. His two oldest sons, who had served in the privileged position as priests under their father, were no longer living. The official census reminds everyone what happened. They died for approaching God in blatant disrespect. Their punishment was such they left no descendents for the priesthood. Their lives which began with tremendous privilege and opportunity fell sadly short. The only lasting memory of them is of their sin and punishment. It was intended to be a warning to all others. If those who handled the holy things of God, and served so near the presence of God could come up so short, then so could anyone else. This reminder serves the same purpose with us. We have much in Christ; let’s not waste it as Nadab and Abihu did.

Lord, too often privilege and great blessing seem to make us vulnerable to sin. We have so much from you we sometimes take it for granted and become careless in our walk with you. Protect me from such carelessness. Help me grow in my respect and appreciation of all you have provided.
