A Separated Life

Read Numbers 5 – 6

And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When either man or woman shall separate themselves to vow a vow of a Nazarite, to separate themselves unto the LORD. Numbers 6:1-2 KJV

A Nazarite (Numbers 6:1-21) was one who had made a vow of special devotion to the Lord for a period of time. These men and women were to be considered holy or separated unto the Lord. There were three prohibitions they had to observe. (1) Total abstinence from anything associated with the grapevine; they were to be influenced by the Lord, not by drink. (2) There was to be no cutting of their hair; this was considered a shame, or to be humbled before the Lord. And (3) there was to be no contact with a dead body of any kind; they were to avoid defilement. Normally this period of devotion would last for only a brief time, but in some cases, like with Samson and John the Baptist, the vow lasted for their lifetime. Although today as Christians, we do not make such vows; our lives should still be separated unto the Lord, humbled, without defilement or outside influence for life.

Lord, help me live a life that is wholly set apart unto you. I want to be under your influence, I want to be humble before you, and I want to live a life that is clean, undefiled by the things of this world.
