A Strategy of Satan

By October 23, 2015No Comments

And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple, and said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down from hence: For it is written, He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee: And in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. Luke 4:9-11 KJV

This is the last of a series of temptations used by the devil against Jesus in the wilderness. Through each of the temptations Jesus had responded with Scripture. By doing so He set an example for us to follow. The Word of God provides our best defense against sin and temptation. However, here we see an interesting strategy of the devil; he quoted Scripture in his attempt to get Jesus to sin. This is a strategy he continues to use effectively with people. Not every preacher or book that uses Scripture is true, many use it deceptively. In response Jesus again used Scripture. Since Scripture does not contradict itself, comparing Scripture with Scripture put light on the misuse of it, and manifested the devil’s strategy.

Lord, it is a little frightening that Satan uses Scripture to deceive, but history has often shown this to be true. Since Your Word is still my best defense, help me be so familiar with it that I can quickly recognize when it is being misquoted.
