Be Careful What You Ask For

Read Numbers 13 – 15

Say unto them, ‘As truly as I live, saith the LORD, as ye have spoken in mine ears, so will I do to you.’  Numbers 14:28 KJV

Most of us know what it is like to speak rash words with someone in a moment of emotional outburst. We wish we could take the words back, but rarely can. They haunt us and cause damage in our relationship with the person. Imagine speaking the same way with God and He holds us to our words. That’s what happened with Israel. When they heard the discouraging report of the spies, they were afraid to enter the Promised Land, spoke out against God, and wished they could die in the wilderness. In His wrath, God could have destroyed them on the spot, but in His mercy He gave them their wish. From twenty years and up all who murmured against Him would die in the wilderness. Rather than immediate death, they would continue to wander in the wilderness, experience less than God’s best, die natural deaths, and their children would enter the Promised Land.

Lord, I have often been told to be careful what I wish for. I have found that to be good advice in life and with people. As it would have been good advice for Israel, it is certainly good advice for me in my walk with You. I do not want to wander through life experiencing less than Your best because of my own rashness. Help me be wise in thought and word with You that I might always enjoy the best You have for me.
