Being a Witness of Christ

Read Acts 7 – 8

Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus. Acts 8:35 KJV

A man of Ethiopia had been to Jerusalem to worship. He was a Gentile who feared God but had not been introduced to Jesus. On his way home he had stopped and was reading Isaiah 53. He struggle to understand who was the subject of the passage and desired someone to teach him. Philip, an evangelist and deacon of the church in Jerusalem, was lead by the Holy Spirit to share the gospel with this Ethiopian. Starting with the same passage in Isaiah, Philip was able to introduce him to Jesus with the result that he believed and was baptized. Philip did three things that must be true of us if we want to share faith in Christ effectively with others; (1) we must be sensitive to the leading of the Spirit, (2) be familiar with the Scriptures so we can start at any place and point a person to Jesus, and (3) be willing to openly talk about Jesus with those we come in contact with.

Lord, I want to be an effective witness of you in my encounters with others just as Philip was with the Ethiopian. Help me be sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit, disciplined in Your Word, and willing to share the gospel with others when the opportunity is given.

A question to ponder: Do I know Isaiah 53 well enough and what it teaches about the Lord that I, like Philip, could lead someone to faith in Jesus with it?
