Caesar and God

By November 8, 2013No Comments

And Jesus answering said unto them, Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s. And they marvelled at him. Mark 12:17 KJV

A combination of religious and political leaders came to Jesus with a question about taxes. These two groups normally had no use for one another, but were now brought together in a common goal: to lay a trap for Jesus. Although they tried to disguise their motive with the use of flattery, Jesus, who knows the heart of man, immediately understood what they were up to. First, He exposed their hypocrisy. I am always amazed at how people think they can fool God even today, but God is not mocked (Galatians 6:7). In answering their question honestly Jesus escaped their trap. We give the government what we owe it and God what we owe Him. That is a timeless principle we all must keep.

Lord, shame on us whenever we scheme to escape our basic responsibilities before man and You. Shame on us even more so when we think we can pull a fast one on You. Help us seek after honesty in all our dealings.
