God is Our Inheritance

Read Numbers 18 – 20

And the Lord spake unto Aaron, Thou shalt have no inheritance in their land, neither shalt thou have any part among them: I am thy part and thine inheritance among the children of Israel. Numbers 18:20 KJV

While all the other tribes of Israel were to receive an allotment of land, Aaron and those of the priesthood did not. They were assigned places to live, and their daily needs were met through the offerings of the people, but they were not to be distracted by the duties associated with property ownership. Instead, they were to care for the Tabernacle and the offerings of the people. Rather than an earthly allotment, God was their inheritance. Were they shortchanged among the tribes? Not at all! With God as their inheritance, what more did they need! According to 1 Peter 2:9, all believers today are members of God’s royal priesthood. Our citizenship (Philippians 3:20), and our inheritance (1 Peter 1:4) is not in this world, but in heaven. This world is passing away, but those who do God’s will abide forever (1 John 2:17). Rather than distracted by this world, let’s focus on our inheritance!

Lord, sometimes I am overly concerned about this world’s goods. Sometimes I wish I had more, and sometimes I which I had less. Of course, such concerns are a distraction from why I am here. Help me live with you, rather than this world in mind.

A question to ponder: If God was truly perceived as our inheritance, how would it change the way we live?
