Our Rock in Times of Trouble

And he said, The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; The God of my rock; in him will I trust: he is my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, my saviour; thou savest me from violence. I will call on the LORD, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies. When the waves of death compassed me, the floods of ungodly men made me afraid; The sorrows of hell compassed me about; the snares of death prevented me; In my distress I called upon the LORD, and cried to my God: and he did hear my voice out of his temple, and my cry did enter into his ears. 2 Samuel 22:2-7 KJV

This is the start of a tremendous prayer of David. It is in response to difficulty. Notice how it is constructed: (1) David first focuses on the person of God and His attributes. When people and circumstances seem to be against us we need a firm place to stand. There is no better place than a solid estimation of God. If He is to hold us up, then we need to know that He can hold us up. (2) By focusing on the person of God rather than his problems, David was able to give God praise in the midst of his problems. Focusing on our problems gives them more credit than they deserve. (3) Knowing that He served such a great God then enabled David to cast all his cares upon Him with confidence that God would hear and act from His position of control in the affairs of men.

Lord, when the waves of the ungodly cause me to fear, help me to see that my feet are firmly planted in You. You are my rock, my refuge, and my high tower! What reason do I have to be afraid? Even in trouble I will praise You, and I will present my case to You, knowing that You care, that You hear, and will help.
