Our Surety for Sin

Read Genesis 43 – 44

I will be surety for him; of my hand shalt thou require him: if I bring him not unto thee, and set him before thee, then let me bear the blame forever. Genesis 43:9 KJV

Although Judah did not always live up to his potential, in this instance he made the kind of decision necessary for the future of his family and the people of Israel: he became surety for his brother Benjamin. With his own life he became a guarantee of his brother’s safety. Later in chapter 44, he passionately appeals to Joseph in behalf of Benjamin based on this promise made to his father. He offered his life in place of his brother’s life. In this way he reminds us of his descendant (See the generation of Christ in Matthew 1:1-16), the Lord Jesus Christ, who became surety for us at the cross of Calvary. In Hebrews 7:22 we learn that He was surety of a better covenant. Our relationship with God is based upon the death of Christ on the cross. How grateful we should be. Jesus has bore the blame of our iniquities forever. As a result, we will never have to answer to God for our sins.

Lord, I thank you for being the surety of my sins at the cross. I am grateful since you have taken the blame for me, I will not have to. Help me live in appreciation of what you have done.

A question to ponder: At different times during His ministry Jesus shared that He was surety for us, how many of them can you find?
