Our Vulnerability to Sin

Read 2 Samuel 10 – 12

And Nathan said to David, Thou art the man. 2 Samuel 12: 7 KJV

The prophet Nathan had just told David a story about a stolen lamb and asked him what the appropriate punishment would be for the thief. Full of anger David responded, death! Without realizing it he had pronounced judgment on himself for David was the man in the story. He had taken Bathsheba, the wife of Uriah, slept with her, and then sought to cover it up with the arranged death of Uriah. We are shocked by what David did. He had enjoyed so many privileges from the hand of God, and yet gave in to the worst kinds of sin: adultery and murder. Like David, we too are often quick to condemn the weaknesses of others while failing to give any thought to how vulnerable we are to the very same sins.  We must never think we are above the worst of sins, temptation comes to all of us, and without God’s protection, in moments of weakness we too can all fall, just as David did.

Lord, help me understand my own vulnerability to sin. My years of serving You and the privileges I have enjoyed from You will not protect me if I start thinking I am above sin. Help me to know my weaknesses and to keep them guarded from the temptation of sin.
