Pitching One’s Tent Toward Sin

By February 17, 2012No Comments

Abram dwelled in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelled in the cities of the plain, and pitched his tent toward Sodom. Genesis 13:12 KJV

Strife was developing between Abraham and his nephew Lot. To avoid this, Abraham offered Lot first choice of all the land before them. Lot should have lifted his eyes to the Lord, but he lifted them and saw the best of the land and chose it for himself. Sometimes what seems the best can turn out the worst for us; this was the case for Lot. His choice illustrates the digression that sin can cause in the life of a man of God (2 Peter 2:7). First Lot looked toward Sodom; he desired and chose what Sodom had to offer. Next Lot pitched his tent toward Sodom (sin itself) and kept moving in that direction. Finally Lot dwelt in Sodom. He thought he was gaining everything but ultimately lost everything.

Lord, how like Lot so many of us are: we look at, move toward, and end up in sin. Protect me from such destructive choices in my life. Help me make the kind of consistent choice Abraham did when he pitched his tent in Hebron, built an altar, and worshiped You.
