Praying for our Critics

Read Numbers 12:1-15

A commonly used word in the Old Testament is murmur; it is to create a low volume noise, or guarded expression of discontent.  In Numbers 12:1-15 we have a surprising example of this against Moses by his sister and brother. It is surprising because they knew better than anyone the character of Moses. He was the meekest (humbly patient & submissive) man on earth (v.3), and faithful in all God’s house (v.7). Their motivation: their distaste for Moses’ choice for a wife (prejudice). Have you noticed, prejudices often motivate murmuring? God’s response was quick in defense of His servant: the Lord spoke suddenly (v.4), He defended His servant (vs. 7-8), and punished the critics (vs. 9-10). The most enlightening aspect of this incident is the response of Moses (v.13). Moses had no reproach, angry denunciation, or revenge; instead he interceded for those who wronged him. God wants the same from each of us toward our critics (Matthew 5:44).

Lord, I feel guilty on two counts. Sometimes I murmur against others and I know how much you hate it. Sometimes I also fail to pray graciously for those who criticize me. Help me mature in humility and faithfulness that neither may characterize my life.
