Sins Committed in Ignorance

Read Leviticus 5:15-19

If a soul commit a trespass, and sin through ignorance, in the holy things of the Lord; then he shall bring for his trespass unto the Lord a ram without blemish out of the flocks, with thy estimation by shekels of silver, after the shekel of the sanctuary, for a trespass offering. Leviticus 5:15 KJV

The idea of sinning through ignorance is frequently brought to our attention in these chapters dealing with offerings for sin. To sin in ignorance could mean a person broke the law in some way without realizing it until it was brought to their attention by someone; or it could also be committed without premeditation, as in a moment of passion. Examples of sinning in ignorance are provided in verses 1-5. Either way, ignorance or the lack of premeditation could not be used as an excuse to avoid the consequences of sin. In other words a person could not claim ignorance and get away with sin. Once it was committed, guilt had to be admitted, and the offering for sin had to be made. We notice here, though committed in ignorance, sin still was not cheap; it demanded a high price, a ram without blemish. It is also worth noting there was no offering for deliberate sin (Numbers 15:30).

Lord, I realize my life has been filled with both sins of ignorance and also deliberate sins. The deliberate sins left me without hope and cut off from you. How grateful I am the sacrifice of Christ is greater than the sacrifice of rams for in coming to Him I have been forgiven of both and reconciled to you. Help me live in light of your undeserved mercy.
