The Broken and Contrite

Read Psalm 29 – 34

The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit. Psalm 34:18 KJV

This psalm was written by David at a very difficult time in his life. He was young, full of strength and energy, but hiding from King Saul, who was determined to kill him out of jealousy. To protect himself, he was pretending to be a madman among the Philistines. David was alone and frightened, unable to be himself, but learned an extremely important truth: God is with the broken and contrite, and delivers them. Some of our worst situations can also be some of the best for us. It often takes difficulties and humbling circumstances for us to learn what David learned. Too often we try to fight our way out of trouble when it may instead be a great opportunity for us. What we need to do on such occasions is humble ourselves before God, let Him know we are weak, and ask Him for help. When we are in trouble beyond our ability that’s when we can see God the clearest.

Lord, when I am weak, I am so glad You do not forsake me, but ready to show Yourself strong in my behalf. Too often pride keeps me from the help I need the very most. Slowly I have learned that humility opens the door to both Your presence and protection. Help me keep the door open.
