The Choice to Serve God

Choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD. Joshua 24:15 KJV

These words were intended by Joshua as a rebuke and a challenge to the people of Israel. After all they had been through, and all God had done for them, they were compromising and adopting the idolatry of the land. His challenge was his rebuke. He told them to choose between the false gods of their fathers or the false gods of the Amorites. It didn’t matter which they chose: both were wrong and would bring judgment. But regardless of their choice Joshua wanted them to know he and his household would continue to serve the Lord God. He modeled the only real choice they had; it was a bold example for them to follow. Even today leaders find it difficult to stand for the right when the crowd moves in a different direction. We continue to need those like Joshua; men, women, and homes who will make the same uncompromising declaration and stand in our world today.

Lord, help me not to slip in my relationship with you. I see it happening around me and realize I am susceptible to the same. It is the desire of my heart that my household and I serve you alone. Help me model the right choice for my family and those I influence.
