The Deity of Christ

Read Colossians 1 – 4

Who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature: For by Him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by Him, and for Him. Colossians 1:15-16 KJV

This is one of the strongest statements in the Bible about the divine nature of Christ. Jesus is not only equal with God, He is God. As the image of the invisible God, He is the exact representation of God. He not only reflects God but reveals God to us. As the firstborn of all creation, He has priority and authority over all. He came from heaven, not from the earth, and is Lord of all. He is completely holy and has authority to judge. Therefore, He is supreme over all creation, including both the physical and spiritual world. All things were made by Him and for Him. As the Creator He has pre-eminence over all things. This makes each of us accountable to Him. Today, when many speak of the real Jesus as only a man, stripping Him of His deity and authority, like the Colossian believers, we must also emphasize the deity of Jesus or our Christian faith will be misdirected, and meaningless.

Lord, it amazes me after all these years your pre-eminence and deity would still be a matter of debate among professing Christians. I realize it is a matter of authority; too many of us still want the ultimate say in our lives. I gladly acknowledge you as my Lord and God, the head of all creation.

A question to ponder: As God, Creator, and Judge, who has priority and authority over all things concerning each of our lives, how much influence should Jesus have in our decisions and activities?
