The Doctrine of the Trinity Plainly Stated

By June 16, 2013No Comments

For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one. 1 John 5:7 KJV

One of my favorite historical figures is the man we call Saint Patrick. He started churches throughout Ireland from 430-460 A.D. He is best remembered for his adherence to the doctrine of the Trinity. Patrick understood that the doctrine of the Trinity is extremely important to an accurate understanding of God and His relationship with us. Most errors in theology start with a misunderstanding of this precious truth. 1 John 5:7 tells us plainly that God is one in essence, so it is wrong to think of or talk about God as more than one. At the same time, as mentioned here, and in many other passages, the Godhead consists of three distinct persons: the Father, the Word (the Son, see John 1), and the Holy Spirit.

Lord, although there is much about this teaching I do not understand about You, the truth of this teaching is certainly obvious in both the Old and New Testament Scriptures. I am most grateful that in Your union of three persons the Father sent the Son to be my Savior from sin, and the Son sent the Spirit to guide me into all truth and to help me live in it.
