The Encouragement of a Friend

And Jonathan Saul’s son arose, and went to David into the wood, and strengthened his hand in God. 1 Samuel 23:16 KJV

David was on the run, doing his best to stay out of Saul’s way. Because of envy and jealousy, Saul wanted David put to death. It was a very discouraging time in his life. It was during this time that Jonathan demonstrated the real value of a good friend. He went in search of David, found him, and encouraged him in the Lord. To encourage is to come alongside with words of comfort. When you are feeling down, and for good reason, there is nothing better. But notice, Jonathan did not encourage David with just anything; he did so in the Lord. He reminded David of the person, presence, and promises of God. That is how you strengthen someone in God. What a needed ministry among God’s people today.

Lord, I am always encouraged when reminded of Your person, presence, and promises. As such reminders have been so helpful to me, may I take the initiative, as Jonathan did, to encourage others in You when they need it.
