For most of my life I have heard the implications of this verse either questioned or explained away. Scientists say the flood story is a myth. Others say if there was a flood which this story is based on, then, it must have been a local flood and not worldwide. Since I believe the Bible to be historically true, then I am convinced the flood story is not a myth. Also, reading these words makes it difficult for me to accept any suggestion of a local flood. The flood in the day of Noah prevailed exceedingly upon the earth, and all the high hills under the whole of heaven were covered with water. That does not just describe a local flood; that describes a flood that was worldwide in scope. The Apostle Peter, in 2 Peter 3:6, refers to this as a historical worldwide event in judgment of sin. He then adds just as God has judged the world in the past due to sin, He will do so again in the future.
Lord, I take Your Word to mean exactly what it says. I suspect people question the truthfulness of it so they can avoid feeling accountable to You. I am glad to be accountable to You through Your Word; You give me a foundation to stand on in confusing days, and real hope for the future.
