The Goodness and Severity of God

By October 13, 2013No Comments

The LORD is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him. Nahum 1:7 KJV

Romans 11:22 refers to the goodness and severity of God, Nahum illustrates both. The book of Nahum is seen as a sequel to the book of Jonah. After being warned of judgment by Jonah, the people of Nineveh repented and were spared. Nahum’s ministry is much later and announces their destruction. God’s mercy on one generation does not protect another generation if they fail to walk with Him. But in this book, filled with words of judgment, Nahum 1:7 stands in sharp contrast. It is a great word of comfort to those who do know and trust the Lord. In Nahum’s day it was especially comforting to the people of Jerusalem. God knows those who trust Him, He is good to them, and He protects them.

Lord, to be known by You, experience Your goodness, and to know that You are my stronghold in times of trouble is very encouraging. Having enjoyed these blessings already, as I continue to trust in You, I know I can count on the same in the future.
