The Incarnation Provides Confidence

Merry Christmas!

Read 1 John 1 – 5

And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life. 1 John 5:20 KJV

In the final verses of this epistle the Apostle John states a series of confident affirmations of faith, this is the final one: we know that the Son of God is come. This is a reference to the incarnation or the birth of Jesus Christ when He took on himself the flesh of man. It is through the birth of Christ that we are able to have a personal understanding about God, for through the incarnation of the Son; God revealed He is with us, loves us, and wants to have a personal relationship with us. It is also through the incarnation that God the Son has revealed God the Father to us, being the express image of God. To know the Son is to know the Father: His works and words were the works and words of the Father. Without the incarnation, God would still be God, but we would not know Him in the personal way we do, and we would not have the personal assurance of eternal life He has provided us.

Lord, how grateful I am for your incarnation. It is only because you came in the likeness of man that I am able to know you as I do. Help me show my appreciation by increasing my understanding of you and by living in the confidence of a relationship with you.

A question to ponder: Since the incarnation is to increase a believer’s confidence with God, how has it encouraged you in your relationship with Him?
