The Living Stone

Read 1 Peter 1 – 5

To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious. 1 Peter 2:4 KJV

This provides a vivid picture for me. For a brief time, I worked with brick-layers in building construction. As they picked up a brick they would quickly examine it, making sure that it was properly shaped, before using it in the building. On occasion they would find one that did not suit their purpose so they simply tossed it off to the side. Peter is saying that Jesus, as a living stone, was examined by men and did not suit their purpose, so they tossed Him out of their lives. This examination continues today by all who hear the gospel. Some reject Him not realizing how valuable He is. Jesus does not fit their present lifestyle or plans for the future so they set Him aside. Others receive Him as the chosen One of God, and find Him precious. He actually reshapes a life to be more in line with God’s purposes. Have you come to Jesus, the chosen, precious, living stone of God?

Lord, having examined you I am amazed that any would reject you, but then I recall that for years I rejected you as well. I am ashamed of that, having since learned by experience how precious you are. Please use me in helping others reexamine you for their lives.

A question to ponder: Having examined Jesus what are some specific reasons people reject Him as having no value in their lives?
