The Numbering Of Israel

Read Numbers 1 – 2

Take ye the sum of all the congregation of the children of Israel, after their families, by the house of their fathers, with the number of their names, every male by their polls. Numbers 1:2 KJV

As Israel prepared to leave Mount Sinai for the land of promise, Moses was instructed to number or take a census of all the people. If reading the first few chapters of the book of Numbers feels like an arithmetic class then think what it must have been like to actually take this census. It would have been long and tedious but it was an important task. This enabled the people of Israel to be organized for the challenges they would face in the journey ahead. It especially prepared them for battle against their enemies. These battles were not only against flesh and blood but spiritual in nature. In our lives, key moments of transition also warrant personal inventory. Before surging forward it is good to take a census of our spiritual condition and resources. Doing so will enable us to meet our challenges more effectively. Remember, the battles we face are also spiritual in nature.

Lord, teach me the value of knowing my real condition, both spiritually and physically, that I might be better equipped to serve you effectively in the challenges before me.
