The Promise of the Church

By October 6, 2015No Comments

And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. Matthew 16:18 KJV

Here is the first mention of the Church in Scripture. I understand the rock or foundation to be the person and work of Jesus Christ. The context supports this conclusion: Jesus is presented as the Christ who was going to the cross. Without that combination there is no salvation, and no Church. Notice, Jesus is also the Owner/Builder of the Church. This is so important to recognize; it must be done His way, not ours. Because Jesus is the Foundation and the Owner/Builder of the Church nothing will keep it from accomplishing His purpose. The gates of a city were the place of power and authority (Ruth 4:1). Jesus was saying that all the power of hell (Ephesians 6:12) can not stand against the Church.

Lord, what a great and encouraging promise this is! People talk about Your Church as being outdated and ineffective. How little they understand about You and Your work. Nothing will keep You from accomplishing what You have planned. I rejoice to be part of Your Church!
