The Responsibility of a Watchman

By September 25, 2013No Comments

But if the watchman see the sword come, and blow not the trumpet, and the people be not warned; if the sword come, and take any person from among them, he is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at the watchman’s hand. Ezekiel 33:6 KJV

This verse is given in the context of instructions about the responsibilities of a watchman to warn, and the hearers to heed his warning. A watchman was someone who stood on the walls of a city and kept a lookout for approaching danger. If the watchman saw danger coming and blew his trumpet as a warning then he had done his job and it was up to the people of the city to respond to the warning. If the watchman did not give warning then he was responsible for what happened. As God’s mouthpiece, Ezekiel was a watchman and had given warning to the people of judgment; this left them responsible for the results. Both the messengers and hearers of God’s Word today have similar responsibilities.

Lord, I am thankful that you used others as watchmen in my life who gave warning to me of coming judgment giving me opportunity to respond and be saved from destruction. I realize that I too am now to act as a watchman for others, help me not be negligent in giving out the warning they need to hear that they too might be saved from destruction.
