The Right Side of Every Battle

Read Joshua 5 – 6

And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn in his hand: and Joshua went unto him, and said unto him, Art thou for us, or for our adversaries? And he said, Nay; but as captain of the host of the LORD am I now come. Joshua 5:13-14 KJV

Joshua left camp to go for a walk. He went to look over Jericho. Apparently he was anxious about the challenge ahead. In his might it looked impossible and probably was. As Joshua gazed upon Jericho, thinking of the challenge ahead, he saw a man with his sword drawn. Joshua asked what any good soldier would, “Whose side are you on?” The answer might surprise some. This was the Captain of the Host of the Lord. We would expect the answer to have been that He was on the side of Joshua, but instead, it was neither. On too many occasions we assume that the Lord is on our side when He is not. It is not a matter of whether He is on our side, but whether we are on His side. Joshua needed to know that. It was not his battle but the Lord’s. Here’s what Joshua was doing: he was making Jericho his battle. We need to remember that as well. We often take too much on our self and expect God to side with us. What we need to do is get on His side.

Lord, how presumptuous of me to think of You as being on my side. Instead of thinking in such terms help me to think as Joshua needed to think. There are only two sides: Yours, and the wrong side. Help me to make sure I am always on Your side.
