The Sin of Hypocrisy

Read Acts 5 – 6

But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land? Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? And after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? Why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? Thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God. Acts 5:3-4 KJV

Ananias and his wife wanted the church to think they were surrendering all when they weren’t. They wanted the church to think they were more spiritual than they were, and so they played the hypocrite. What happened to them can still happen with or without the exchange of money. For years I’ve heard people charge Christians with hypocrisy and, for the most part, they’ve been right. How careful you and I need to be we do not fall into the trap Ananias and Sapphira fell into. It is such a temptation to make people think we are more spiritual than we are, and it finds its source with Satan. He whispers in our ear we can get away with it. Because it is such a temptation, a lot of people try. They try and deceive the church, but, as Peter pointed out. They’re really trying to deceive God and the fact is we can’t lie to God. He knows the truth about us. He’s the One that sees the heart.

Lord, hypocrisy seems like such an innocent sin, but it deceives people, fills us with false pride, and robs You of glory. It is not an innocent sin; it is of the devil and abominable in Your sight. I feel vulnerable to it and ask You for protection from it.

A question to ponder: How does even the slightest form of hypocrisy rob God of glory belonging only to Him?
