The Three-fold Provision of God’s Law

Read Romans 7 – 8

What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet. But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. For without the law sin was dead. For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died. Romans 7:7-9 KJV

According to these verses, the Law of God provides us with a three-fold knowledge of sin. (1) First, it establishes the standard by which all mankind are equally accountable. Without a set standard, then all behavior is relative. What’s right and wrong in my eyes may not be in your eyes. With God’s Law regardless of how a society may change, certain behaviors will always be wrong. (2) Not only does God’s Law set the standard, it shows each of us what sin is. Sin takes place whenever you and I transgress or violate God’s law. (3) The Law of God also stirs up sin in each of our lives. Have you noticed whenever you are told not to do something there is suddenly a strong desire to do it? The sinful desire is already in your life but God’s Law reveals it. This three-fold provision of God’s Law helps us to know we are sinners incapable of saving ourselves, in need of a Savior.

Lord, I am grateful for your Law for it is only by it that I know I am a sinner. Feeling the consequences of sin made me feel hopeless until I realized your Law actually pointed to your greater provision, a Savior.

A question to ponder: How has God used this three-fold provision of His Law to protect you from self-destructive behavior and point you to the Savior?
