The Veil that Divided

Read Exodus 26:31-34

And thou shalt hang up the veil under the taches, that thou mayest bring in thither within the veil the ark of the testimony: and the veil shall divide unto you between the holy place and the most holy. Exodus 26:33 KJV

The Tabernacle and later, the Temple, were separated into two rooms by a heavy curtain or veil; the first room was the holy place, and the second was the most holy place, also called the holy of holies. The most holy place contained the Ark of the Covenant and the Mercy Seat where the blood of atonement was sprinkled once a year. It was in the most holy place that God’s glory was manifested. The veil kept all but the high priest from entering the holy place with the blood of the atonement once a year. It hung between the people of Israel and God as a wall of separation. The separation was necessary because of God’s holiness and man’s sinfulness. This veil remained until Jesus died on the cross as God’s sacrifice. According to Matthew 27:50-51, as Jesus died, the veil was rent from top to bottom, signaling the way is now open; we have access to the Father through the Son.

Lord, what a wonderful blessing we enjoy through your work on the cross; the veil which separated us from God was torn open by you and left open that we might enter the Throne of Grace boldly. Having such a privileged blessing help me use it often.

A question to ponder as you sleep: Although the veil has been torn open we often act as if it is still in place by our little use of the access we now have, what keeps us from entering the presence of God more often?
