Washing Up to Meet with God

Read Exodus 20 – 22

And the LORD said unto Moses, Go unto the people, and sanctify them to day and to morrow, and let them wash their clothes. Exodus 19:10 KJV

In order to meet with God and hear His voice the people of Israel were to sanctify themselves. To sanctify simply means to make clean. They were to take three days in getting themselves ready, making their attitudes and actions right, even to the point of washing their clothes. This was necessary for their protection. Because God is holy (free of sin) and they were unholy, the consequence of not properly going before Him was death. This struck me how unprepared we often are to meet with and hear from God. That says much about our unholy perspective of His holiness. We believe on Sunday morning that we gather together to meet with and hear from God in a special time of worship. What do we do to set ourselves apart unto Him? Are we really ready to meet with Him? Are we clean, awake, and ready to present our very best so that we can receive His best?

Lord, I am ashamed that too often I disregard Your holiness. I come before You covered in the filth of this world without having taken the time to make myself clean through the washing of Your Word, prayer, and confession. No wonder You seem far from me at times. It is only because I am further from You than I realize. Help me to always be conscious of my own condition before approaching You.
